Institute of Engineering & Management (IEM), is a privately funded premier technical and management school located in the state of West Bengal, India. It was founded in 1989 and is thus the oldest private engineering school in the province. In its early years, it was operated under University of Kalyani[1]. Since 2001-2002 academic session, its affiliating body was changed to West Bengal University of Technology.

Location

IEM possesses decentralized academic campuses. Three of the academic campuses and an administrative unit are located in Salt Lake Electronics Complex (Bidhan Nagar), Sector-V, Salt Lake City. Another campus is in Barasat, greater Calcutta. It has a separate accommodation facility for the students.

Academics

The undergraduate courses offer B.Tech in several engineering fields including Information Technology while the postgraduate courses offer M.Tech. There is also a provision for Ph.D in Electronics and Communication Engineering and MSc. in Information Science. The institute also offers postgraduate diploma course (Polytechnic) in Management Studies.
Apart from these, the faculty of technology is also offering Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) degree course. The institute also offers Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level respectively.

Admission and Alumni

At the undergrad level, students are primarily admitted on the basis of the ranks in the state-level engineering entrance examination - WBJEE and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) [2]. Admission in MBA is conducted through nationwide Common Admission Test. The institute's alumni can be found in major multinational IT and communication companies like Tech Mahindra Limited, Tata Consultancy Services, Capgemini, Sasken Communication Technologies, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys Technologies Limited, IBM India, Wipro, Microsoft, Oracle etc. A significant fraction of students pursue higher studies both in India and abroad.

The institute generally has favorable ratings among various newspaper and magazines as a top engineering College of West Bengal [3] [4] [5] .The management college of IEM has been categorized as an “A” class management school by the AIMA (All India Management Association), New Delhi. It is ranked among the top 50 Indian management colleges by the Dalal Street journal. The college is among the top 100 B-Schools in India according to the CSR-GHRDC Best B-School Survey, 2009.[6][7]

Research

The institute conducts research is diverse areas. The research areas include robotics, radio frequency identification, computer programming, renewable energy and so on. These groups also participate in several national and international level events, like Kshitij, Techniche, Shaastra and Robocon. Recently, the Robotics Group has been involved in a project developed in alliance with the Department of Defense, Government of India, which would enable the user to control a robot or unmanned vehicle over very long distance using ordinary CDMA mobile phones. Also the development of a Robotic arm and a humanoid robot project is in the full swing.
